In Vacuo is a dance piece created by Cia Yurdance, co-directed by Míriam Aguilera and Rita Noutel.

Synopsis

In Vacuo is a pictorial work that invites self-inquiry and opens upquestions that affect us all, such as human fragility and theimpermanence of life. Two dancers move in an empty, infinite space, where everythingappears, passes, fluctuates, disappears and returns.A space to question, to reflect and to continue fighting to speakwith our own voice even if the sound vanishes in the immenseemptiness.

Description

“The void in art creates an effect in the viewer to see himself, toquestion and readapt to what is in front of him.” Kasimir Malvich
In Vacuo is an artistic creation where two performers shareexperiences about the possibilities of experiencing emptiness, constructing a narrative in the form of dance theater. The audience accompanies the performers in a space inhabited bythe echo that remains after an absence. An absence that allowssomething to manifest itself through it.Is perception of space and the present moment, a way to occupyplaces, to solve gaps, to live and transmute them?

Original Idea

In Vacuo is a conceptual work inspired by the post-pandemic era, exploring the idea of emptiness as a metaphor for this time. The project focuses on the void as a space that is no longer what it once was but still unoccupied. It represents a place for reflection and questioning, where the struggle to find meaning is heightened by silence and emptiness. The work seeks to provoke self-inquiry and address universal themes such as human fragility and the impermanence of life.
The concept delves into how emptiness has been represented in various art forms, such as film, painting, and music. Key references include Roger Ebert’s appreciation of “gratuitous movement” or pauses in film that allow characters to exist in space and time. The Japanese concept “MA,” as described by Miyazaki, highlights purposeful silence or absence that invites presence. Artists like Kasimir Malevich, with his white square painting, and Escher, with his exploration of positive and negative space, inspire the approach to absence in the work. Musician John Cage’s piece 4’33” further underscores the importance of silence.
The project incorporates these artistic ideas to create a dynamic between what is seen and unseen, using sound, silence, light, and darkness to shape the narrative. In Vacuo challenges audiences to reflect on how we occupy and relate to emptiness, questioning the permanence of existence itself.
